Survey in the Holosiivsky district of Kyiv. What does the Institute for Nuclear Research of NAS of Ukraine do?

SNRIU press service together with the Youth Energy Community of Ukraine conducted survey in the Holosiivsky district of Kyiv to check awareness of the public on nuclear and radiation safety issues. We want to thank all who agreed to answer our questions

Vasyl, 80 years old, scientist

1. Do you know what does the Institute for Nuclear Research of NAS of Ukraine do? Which research does it conduct?

«Frankly speaking, I find it difficult to answer this question. I think the Institute is engaged into research of nucleus structure».

2. Is it important to develop this scientific area for establishing energy independence of the state?

«I can definitely say that it is important. First of all, not for the nuclear energy, but for the development of radiation medicine.».

Stanislav, 56 years old, scientist

1. Do you know what does the Institute for Nuclear Research of NAS of Ukraine do? Which research does it conduct?

«Frankly speaking, I do not know much about activities of the Institute for Nuclear Research. I work nearby. However, I have never been there. I guess that scientists of the Institute conduct scientific experiments, probably related to the elimination of ChNPP accident consequences».

2. Is it important to develop this scientific area for establishing energy independence of the state?

«There is no doubt, that it is very important».

Yurii, 77 years old, retired

1. Do you know what does the Institute for Nuclear Research of NAS of Ukraine do? Which research does it conduct?

«Before I retired, I worked as a doctor, so I am not well aware of nuclear research issues. Yet, most of my retired friends are former experts of nuclear area. They told me that the Institute for Nuclear Research is of critical importance, because it is the only institution where you can conduct molecular research in different areas. The main trouble is financing of the Institute.».

2. Is it important to develop this scientific area for establishing energy independence of the state?

«Of course, it is important. Given the current political situation, there is a probability that Ukraine will have to return the nuclear status».

Iryna, 40 years old, economist

1. Do you know what does the Institute for Nuclear Research of NAS of Ukraine do? Which research does it conduct?

«I think that the Institute conducts some nuclear research. I do not know the details.».

2. Is it important to develop this scientific area for establishing energy independence of the state?

«Probably, yes. I am sure that nuclear institutions, such as the Institute for Nuclear Research shall be located away from residential buildings. For example, in the countryside or in the industrial zone. We now see the Institute from our windows. God forbid if something happens, who will suffer in the first place?».

Raisa, 60 years old, chemist

1. Do you know what does the Institute for Nuclear Research of NAS of Ukraine do? Which research does it conduct?

«Whatever they do, whatever studies are conducted there, I know that the territory around the Institute is clean. I live nearby all my life. The Hydrometeorological Institute is located nearby and sometimes experts from there measure radiation. They say that radiation background is normal».

2. Is it important to develop this scientific area for establishing energy independence of the state?

«Any scientific development is vital and necessary for Ukraine».

Marharyta, 80 years old, retired

1. Do you know what does the Institute for Nuclear Research of NAS of Ukraine do? Which research does it conduct?

«My family and I came from Moscow to Ukraine. We live in the Holosiivsky district more than 35 years. I want to say that air here is very clean. After the Chornobyl accident, there was a map of radiation contamination in Kyiv printed in the newspaper. Since then, our district was one of the safest in the capital. On 1 May 1986, I was walking with my granddaughter. Nothing wrong happened to either her or me. I do not know what exactly does the Institute for Nuclear Research do. Yet, if they carry out dangerous experiments, I think more people in our district would suffer from cancer. There is nothing like that.».

2. Is it important to develop this scientific area for establishing energy independence of the state?

«Of course, it is important. If not from nuclear power plants, where would we take power? Ukraine must develop nuclear industry. We shall not lag behind other countries!».

Yulia, 29 years old, scientist

1. Do you know what does the Institute for Nuclear Research of NAS of Ukraine do? Which research does it conduct?

«I live nearby for many years. However, I do not know what studies are conducted in the Institute. Still, I can confidently say that radiation background here is normal. I work in the Hydrometeorological Institute and we investigate air. Territory around the Institute for Nuclear Research is one of the cleanest in Kyiv».

2. Is it important to develop this scientific area for establishing energy independence of the state?

«Yes, it is important to improve nuclear science for economic development of the state. Besides, we have very few experts in this area. Youth and students shall be trained in the Institute for Nuclear Research».

Mykhailo, 18 years old, student of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute

1. Do you know what does the Institute for Nuclear Research of NAS of Ukraine do? Which research does it conduct?

«I think that experts in the Institute explore atoms and nuclei, synthesize them, and, probably, receive new elements».

2. Is it important to develop this scientific area for establishing energy independence of the state?

«Of course, it is important. However, experiments must be safe not to lead to the second Chornobyl accident».
