The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted in the first reading the draft law on the change of classification of RW

On April 17, 2018, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted in the first reading as a basis the draft Law of Ukraine “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine on Improvement of the Law on Radioactive Waste Management”. It envisages bringing the Ukrainian classification of radioactive waste (RW) in line with the International Standards on Nuclear Safety of the IAEA.

“We hope for further support of the draft law. In accordance with the new classification of RW, in Ukraine, four types of storage facilities should be created: surface, near-surface, storage facility for radioactive waste disposal at medium depths and geological storage. Such a system is more effective, since it will ensure the safe management of radioactive waste and its disposal and will allow the most efficient use of funds,” – Vitalii Petruk, the Head of SAUEZM, said.

The specialists of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspection of Ukraine together with leading European experts from France, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Sweden, involved in the European Commission in the framework of the implementation of the project of international technical assistance worked on this draft law.
