Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine and Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute Negotiated Launching Master’s Training Program in Nuclear Security

On 20 February 20 2018, the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine under the chairmanship of Svitlana Kulchytska, Deputy Director of the Department of Nuclear Energy and Atomic Industry, held a meeting with representatives of the International Nuclear Security Program of the National Nuclear Security Administration of the US Department of Energy under the cooperation initiated by G7 Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction.

Specialists of the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine, Energoatom Company, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and Training Center attended the meeting for Physical Protection, Accounting and Control of Nuclear Material of the Institute for Nuclear Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The participants of the meeting discussed the issues related to the implementation of the project cooperation to launch the master’s training of specialists in the field of nuclear security in Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

Under the implementation of the project “Preparing the Human Resource Development Program for Nuclear Security in Ukraine”, the US party grants support to the development of training materials for the master’s training program in physical security specialty to be launched in 2019 on the basis of nuclear energy specialty in Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

The initiative of the Ministry aimed at this program is implemented under the restart of training for specialists in the field of physical protection, accounting and control of nuclear materials, which was carried out by the Sevastopol National University of Nuclear Energy and Industry until 2014 but suspended as a result of the illegal annexation of the Crimea by the Russian Federation.

Representatives of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute reported on the implementation of the previous work stages and the status of current ones. The Parties made positive assessment of cooperation under the project.

The second issue on the agenda was the implementation of the project cooperation to assess the security culture at Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

The National Nuclear Security Administration of the US Department of Energy (DOE/NNSA) and the International Nuclear Security Program cooperate with the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine in the implementation of the Pilot Project on Security Culture Assessment at Rivne NPP of the Energoatom Company.

The Parties expressed their hope for fruitful cooperation during the implementation of the Pilot Project on Security Culture Assessment and negotiated further actions under the project implementation.
