Russia has threatened NATO with the use of nuclear weapons in the event of a blockade of the Kaliningrad region
NATO has received a diplomatic note from the Russian Federation stating Russia’s readiness to use nuclear weapons if the North Atlantic Treaty Organization attempts to cut off the Kaliningrad region – a Russian exclave that was incorporated into the USSR after World War II and borders Poland and Lithuania, with a coastline on the Baltic Sea.
The diplomatic note states that Russia will use all available forces and means, including nuclear weapons, to defend its territory if NATO countries attempt to isolate the Kaliningrad region.
In response, NATO stated that it is a defensive alliance dedicated to countering threats to its members and clarified that none of its exercises or actions pose a threat to Russian territory.
In its message, NATO urged the Russian Federation to end its unprovoked, full-scale invasion of Ukraine and to stop its increasingly reckless behaviour towards Alliance members. NATO also called on Russia to stop its irresponsible nuclear rhetoric.
