UK University Launches MCR Simulator
Lancaster University (UK) has launched a main control room (MCR) simulator for nuclear facilities. Students will be able to use it starting in the autumn of 2026.
Key operational characteristics and capabilities of the Lancaster University Nuclear Operations Simulator (LUNOS) include modeling nuclear fission and fusion processes for various types of reactors. Unlike static, single-technology platforms, this software can rapidly switch to simulate different power generation models.
These models are built using industry-grade source code from international organizations such as Westinghouse, GSE Solutions, Tokamak Energy, and the Institute for Energy Technology (Norway). These include Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR), Small Modular Reactors (SMR) and tokamak fusion reactors.
The physical space is designed to replicate real-world operating conditions as accurately as possible. The panoramic displays feature a massive, immersive three-sided screen configuration that provides a comprehensive overview of all power plant systems. Students can physically move furniture and consoles to recreate the layouts of various real-world main control rooms accurately. The state-of-the-art digital operator workstations mirror the design of contemporary MCRs.
The simulator serves several distinct academic and national strategic objectives. Specifically:
- Cybersecurity: It provides high-fidelity scenarios in which nuclear facilities undergo simulated cyberattacks, training professionals in the protection of critical national infrastructure.
- Nuclear Engineering: Enabling undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students to apply theoretical concepts in practice.
- Human Factors and Psychology: The university’s psychology department uses the facility to study human behaviour, compliance with safety protocols and group decision-making processes in stressful emergency situations.
- Advanced Session Analysis: Multi-stream recording software integrates audio, video, screen captures, data logs, and instructor-initiated malfunctions into a single playback file for in-depth debriefing after scenario completion.
