Site for the First SMR in Poland Selected
The first small modular reactor (SMR) BWRX-300 will be constructed in Poland in Wloclawek. The site decision was announced as the ORLEN state-owned power firm and Synthos Green Energy agreed on the creation of the OSGE (Orlen Synthos Green Energy) joint venture.
The agreement between ORLEN and Synthos consists of two key components. The first component is a revised version of the company’s articles of association and shareholder agreement, under which ORLEN and Synthos each hold a 50 % equity stake. The amendments ensure equal rights for both shareholders and, at the same time, strengthen ORLEN’s control over strategic corporate matters. The second component is a licensing agreement that grants OSGE full access to the BWRX-300 (standard design) developed in the USA. This will allow the project to proceed towards the construction of Poland’s first SMR facility located in Wloclawek – a site of strategic importance for ORLEN.
Wloclawek was one of seven locations selected by OSGE in 2023 for further geological surveys to host plants based on GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEVH) BWRX-300. The other locations were: Ostroleka, Stawy Monowskie, Daborwa Gornica, Nowa Huta and the Tarnobrzeg Special Economic Zone in Stalowa Wola and Warsaw.
