Europe to Buy Nuclear Fuel From US
The European Union and the United States have concluded an agreement aimed at significantly strengthening the energy partnership between the parties. Under this agreement, the EU intends to purchase liquefied natural gas, oil, nuclear fuel, and related services from the United States over the next three years (through the end of 2028), with a total value of around $750 billion (€700 billion).
In 2024, EU countries still imported nuclear materials from russia worth approximately €700 million. According to the new agreement, this amount will gradually be replaced by supplies from the United States.
Replacing russian energy resources is part of the broader REPowerEU strategy aimed at fully eliminating energy dependence on russia. To achieve this, the EU is actively expanding its infrastructure.
The agreement with the United States does not conflict with the goals of the European Green Deal: the EU remains committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2050. The new energy import contracts are considered a temporary measure to ensure energy security in the context of phasing out russian resources.
