Nuclear Energy Agency Publishes Updated Small Modular Reactor Dashboard
This is the third edition of the NEA Small Modular Reactor Dashboard, which reviews and analyzes 74 small modular reactor (SMR) designs to assess progress in areas such as licensing, siting, financing, supply chains, engagement, and fuel.
According to data analyzed by NEA experts, 51 SMR projects are currently involved in pre-licensing or licensing processes across 15 countries, and there are approximately 85 active discussions between SMR developers and site-owners worldwide. Progress has also been made in financing and supply chain readiness. Since the release of the previous NEA SMR Dashboard in 2024, the number of SMR designs that have secured at least one source of funding or announced funding commitments has increased by 81%.
Seven designs are either operating or under construction, and there is a strong pipeline of projects progressing toward first-of-a-kind deployment. The diversity of designs provides potential customers with a wide range of options, but it also poses challenges for regulators and the industrial supply chain. However, the report describes an opportunity to streamline global supply chains and promote standardization in order to enhance SMR economic viability.
SMR Dashboard also includes information about each SMR design, such as technology concept, configuration, outlet temperature, size and fuel type, including requirements for enrichment.
According to the Agency, each design assessment uses information exclusively from verified open sources, and evaluations are based on consultations with SMR designers, independently verified to provide additional information.
The data in the third edition of the NEA Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Dashboard reflects developments as of 14 February 2025.
