Increased Radiation Detected on MAN Truck
On 16 September 2024, a KORDON automated radiation monitoring system was triggered during the incoming inspection and weighing of a MAN truck carrying scrap metal. The incident occurred at the truck scale in Section No. 3 of the Drop Hammer Shop at PJSC ‘ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih’. The maximum gamma dose rate recorded on the truck’s surface was 1.3 μSv/h.
In November 2024, specialists from the Dnipro Interregional Affiliate of the Radon Association conducted a radiation survey and sorted the scrap metal on the MAN truck. During the inspection, six fragments of a metal cable with a total weight of approximately 5 kg were identified. The exposure dose rate at a distance of 0.1 m from the surface of the contaminated items ranged from 1.5 to 8.0 μSv/h. The identified radiation source was cesium-137. A swab test confirmed the absence of surface contamination.
The radioactive material was removed from the detection site and transferred to the radioactive waste disposal site of the Dnipro Interregional Affiliate of the Radon Association as part of ongoing criminal investigation.
Information on the detection of radioactive material in illicit trafficking will be added to the IAEA Incident and Trafficking Database (ITDB).
