Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Approved Environmental Program for Radioactive Waste Management
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the draft Law of Ukraine “On the National Targeted Environmental Program for Radioactive Waste Management,” developed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources in cooperation with the State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management.
The document defines the key areas of state policy in radioactive waste management and will serve as the foundation for developing an efficient management system. The goal of the program is to significantly reduce the negative environmental impact of facilities generating radioactive waste (such as NPPs), optimize their storage and disposal processes, establish strict control, and ensure transparency at all stages.
To enhance environmental and radiation safety in Ukraine, the following measures are planned for implementation during 2025–2032:
- upgrading and modernization of the infrastructure at existing facilities, such as radioactive waste storage facilities, and the construction of new facilities using modern technologies;
- improvement of the radioactive waste accounting system;
- development of regulatory and legal framework for radioactive waste management;
- engagement of international support for technical and financial assistance in implementing the Program’s objectives and measures.
