The purpose of this conference is to provide an international forum to assess progress and discuss opportunities, challenges and enabling conditions for accelerated development and safe and secure deployment of SMR among all possible SMR stakeholders.
The main objectives are:
- Present and discuss the state-of-the-art design and technology of SMRs and microreactors and related fuel cycle approaches;
- Review approaches to safety, security and safeguards specific to SMRs;
- Discuss legislative and regulatory frameworks and current practices governing the design, development and deployment of SMRs;
- Consider ways to facilitate SMR deployment in the near term, including approaches to financing and contracting;
- Discuss the status of national nuclear power programs in Member States, highlighting technical and non-technical expectations and end-user requirements for SMR design;
- Exchange information on the latest initiatives by Member States and the IAEA on SMR development and deployment, including NHSI, and promote international cooperation among all stakeholders.
The conference is expected to help enhance ongoing activities in Member States and broaden the prospects for safe and secure deployment of SMRs, offering options to achieve clean energy transition and security of energy supply in both emerging and developing countries.
