Finland Starts Uranium Mining
On June 18, 2024, Terrafame started mining natural uranium at its industrial site in Sotkamo, Finland. Prior to this, the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) conducted an inspection at the facility and established that it could be safely commissioned.
When the plant starts operating, Finland will become the only EU member state that produces uranium. The extracted uranium will be transported abroad for further processing, after which it will be used to produce nuclear energy.
The plant is expected to reach full capacity by 2026, when it will produce about two hundred tons of uranium per year. The production capacity corresponds to approximately nine months of consumption at the Olkiluoto-3 NPP in Finland.
Uranium production is planned to be conducted over an operating period of at least 30 years.
