“The Nuclear Sublime”: the interior of the UK’s nuclear facilities

“Nuclear Sublime” is a photography project by Michael Collins, Visiting Professor of Photography, University of Suffolk, and a large-format photography book of the same name. Michael Collins notes: “Nuclear power is the incarnation of the sublime….”.

For three years, Michael Collins has been photographing the interiors of decommissioned and operating nuclear reactors and power stations across the UK.  Collins was granted unprecedented access to Dounreay, Sellafield, Chapelcross, Winfrith, Dungeness, Trawsfynydd, Sizewell A and B, Wylfa and Torness. He documented nuclear reactors, nuclear waste storage facilities, control rooms and measuring instruments, and the process of decommissioning old facilities.

The photographs depict the present state and future of Britain’s nuclear industry— usually hidden from public view.
