Items with Increased Levels of Ionizing Radiation Detected in Kyiv
On 7 February 2024, suspicious items with increased levels of ionizing radiation were detected in the sanitary and health laboratory of the Kyiv City Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (3 Estonska St., Kyiv).
The discovery was made during the preparation of the storage room for major repairs on the ground floor. The results of the radiation survey revealed items, including watches, flasks, devices, test tubes with unidentified substances, without the appropriate documents. The equivalent gamma radiation dose rate on the surface of the items ranged from 0.8 to 548 μSv/h.
The radiation survey was carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Cabinet Resolution No. 813 of 2 June 2003 “On Approval of the Procedure for Interaction between Executive Authorities and Legal Entities Operating in the Field of Nuclear Energy Use in Case of Detection of Radioactive Materials in Illicit Trafficking”.
The radioactive materials were removed from the detection site and transported to the temporary storage of the RADON Association in the framework of the pre-trial investigation.
Information on the detection of illicit trafficking of radioactive materials will be added to the IAEA Incident and Trafficking Database (ITDB).
