Saskatchewan Continues Construction of eVinci Microreactor
On Monday, 27 November, Premier of Saskatchewan Scott Moe announced $80 million for the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) to pursue the construction of the eVinci microreactor in Saskatchewan.
According to President and CEO of SRC Mike Crabtree, the company’s goal is to see the first eVinci microreactor in an industrial application and lay the groundwork for many more projects in the future. SRC will apply the research and knowledge gained from the licensing and deployment of an initial microreactor to support the Saskatchewan nuclear industry to better understand this type of technology and the potential for future microreactor projects in the province.
Subject to licensing and regulatory requirements, the eVinci microreactor will be constructed by the Westinghouse Electric Company and commissioned by 2029.
The eVinci is classified as a microreactor capable of producing five MW of electricity, over 13 MW of high-temperature heat, or operating in combined heat and power mode.
Westinghouse President and CEO Patrick Fragman noted the benefits of the eVinci technology, including transportability, carbon-free energy and heat, no water use, and removal from site after continuous operation for eight years or more.
