Object with Increased Gamma Radiation Level Detected in Parcel in Kyiv
A suspicious object with increased gamma radiation level was detected on the territory of Ukrposhta Kyiv Branch, Mail Processing and Transportation Directorate. According to the data of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, the radioactive material was detected in a parcel on 2 October, 2023.
In compliance with the requirements of the Cabinet Resolution No. 813 “On Approval of the Procedure for Interaction of Executive Power Authorities and Legal Entities Carrying out Activities in the Field of the Use of Nuclear Energy in Case of Detection of Illicit Trafficking of Radioactive Materials” dated 2 June 2003, a Commission conducted a radiation survey which resulted in detection of DP-63 dosimeter in a parcel. During the survey, an increased gamma radiation level (25.3 μSv/h) was detected on the surface of the object.
The radioactive material was retrieved from the place of its detection and transferred to the radioactive waste interim confinement facility at the Central Industrial Site of the State Specialized Enterprise “Radon Association” in the framework of pretrial investigation.
Information on detection of illicit trafficking of radioactive materials will be recorded in the IAEA Incident and Trafficking Database (ITDB).
