Challenges of War in Nuclear Energy: Summary of the 8th INUDECO 2023 Conference
On 27-28 April 2023, the 8th INUDECO International Conference “Problems of Decommissioning of Nuclear Energy Facilities and Environment Restoration” was held.
Before the start of the conference, an online discussion “Ecocide: the war in Ukraine is stealing the future of the entire planet” was held. Young generation was involved in the discussion, namely young scientists, students of higher educational institutions, students of grades 10-11 of schools. During the discussion, the problems of using ecocide as a weapon, global warming, the impact of the war on the environment in Ukraine and environmental crimes during the war in Ukraine, etc., were discussed.
The conference was attended by 165 participants, 30 institutions from 20 countries, who presented 63 reports on nuclear and radiation safety in Ukraine.
For the second year in a row, the main topic of the conference is nuclear energy challenges in wartime, the consequences of the russian occupation of nuclear facilities in Ukraine, consequences of the war for the environment, the post-war restoration of nuclear generation, and emergency response during the war.
The main topics of the conference were: management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel, the implementation status of the project to transform the Shelter into an environmentally safe system, operation, maintenance and repair of nuclear power plants under martial law, NPP decommissioning.
In addition, the topic of communications in the energy sector was included for the first time. In particular, a discussion panel “Black Sea Experts NucTalk: Nuclear Disinformation in the Black Sea Region” was held, during which the issues of nuclear blackmail, the use of nuclear narratives by russia, disinformation and importance of available information as a countermeasure were raised.
This year the conference was held for charitable purposes. During the conference, funds were collected for the purchase of S/U/S double-sided staircase for learning to walk for the rehabilitation department in the Municipal Non-Profit Enterprise “Slavutych City Hospital”.
