Westinghouse Company Presented AP300 Small Modular Reactor
Westinghouse Electric presented AP300 small modular reactor (SRM) – 300 MW water-cooled water-moderated power reactor. The design of the improved AP1000 nuclear reactor was taken as the basis of AP300 SMR. Currently, this is the only SMR that is based on the design of the operating installation.
AP300 small modular reactor will use identical technology to AP1000, including basic equipment, structural components, passive safety, checked fuel, and the monitoring and control systems. AP300 will use a mature supply chain, rapid load tracking capabilities and proven operating and maintenance procedures.
Westinghouse’s advanced passive safety system automatically provides safe shutdown without operator intervention and eliminates the need for backup power and cooling. SMRs are also characterized by a simplified design, lower capital costs and reduced occupied area. Like AP1000, AP300 has designed lifetime over 80 years.
AP300 small modular reactor design uses Westinghouse Gen III+ technology approved by US, UK and Chinese regulators and meets European Utility Regulations (EUR) standards for nuclear power plants. This provides licensing advantages and significantly reduces delivery risk for customers in the utility, oil and gas and industrial spheres. The project is expected to be certified by 2027, after which site-specific licensing and construction of unit No. 1 will take place by the end of the decade.
