Wartime Radiation Hazard
To increase the awareness of the public of the wartime radiation safety, the experts of the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS) developed the information booklets “Wartime Radiation Hazard”.
The increased radiation hazard due to the military activities can relate to the following events:
- damage and looting of the enterprises and institutions where radiation sources (RS) are used, for example, metallurgical plants, nuclear medicine centers, mining facilities, separate scientific institutions;
- accidents at nuclear power plants (NPP) caused both by the damage of the power units and impossibility of electrical power supply to maintain the NPP in safe condition;
- use of nuclear weapons or “dirty” bombs.
The booklet includes 5 information blocks on radiation hazards related to radiation sources, NPP accidents, use of nuclear weapons or a “dirty” bomb, iodine prophylaxis and sources with reliable information on the state of nuclear and radiation safety and rules of personal protection during the war.
