Uranium Detected in Package at Heathrow Airport
On 29 December 2022, a package contaminated with uranium that arrived in the UK at Heathrow Airport was detected following a routine screening. It was found in a scrap metal shipment.
The Metropolitan Police said its counter-terrorism command unit was contacted by Border Force colleagues at the airport after the contaminated material was discovered. Counter-terror commander Richard Smith said the amount of uranium “was extremely small” and has been assessed by experts as posing no threat to the public.
As part of the investigation, no arrests were made, but the investigation is ongoing to clarify all the circumstances and confirm that there are no risks to the public.
