Poll in Sviatoshyno District of Kyiv. “Do You Think Construction of New NPP Units Is Realistic in Ukraine? What, in Your Opinion, Are Alternatives to High Power NPPs?”
On 12 October 2021, the Uatom.org Editorial Board conducted a poll in the Sviatoshyno district of Kyiv. Kyivans were asked about further development of the domestic energy industry and about their position on the construction of new high power NPP units in Ukraine, because this is provided for by the Energy Strategy of Ukraine for the period up to 2035 approved by the Government. We thank everyone who agreed to answer our questions frankly.

Do you think construction of new NPP units is realistic in Ukraine?
— In the current situation, the construction of new NPP units, I think, is unlikely. Now there are enough challenges: COVID-19, Delta strain… I do not believe that there will be funds to construct new power units. I believe that old ones will be repaired and in other things, I do not believe. The government promises a lot, but does not always fulfill it.
What, in your opinion, are the alternatives to high power NPPs in Ukraine?
— Renewable energy sources, definitely.

Do you think construction of new NPP units is realistic in Ukraine?
— Frankly, I don’t know. In our country, this issue is addressed by people who sell electricity. Atomic energy is the cheapest, but its cost is artificially high. I suspect that with further construction of new NPP units, the price of electricity will increase several times. For me, a retiree, this will be bad news.
What, in your opinion, are the alternatives to high power NPPs in Ukraine?
— I believe that nuclear energy has no alternatives in Ukraine. However, of course, it should be safe so as not to repeat the tragic mistakes of the past.

Do you think construction of new NPP units is realistic in Ukraine?
— Why not? I think it’s quite realistic.
What, in your opinion, are the alternatives to high power NPPs in Ukraine?
— Frankly speaking, I am a supporter of nuclear energy development in Ukraine. At the same time, I am against export. Since export is establishing business of specific individuals, while the main vector of development should be safety.

Do you think construction of new NPP units is realistic in Ukraine?
— Yes. However, their construction should be safe.
What, in your opinion, are the alternatives to high power NPPs in Ukraine?
— I do not see any alternatives. Solar energy is not reliable. Wind energy is low power and not suitable for Ukraine, as far as I know. What’s left? Atomic. New power units should be constructed, but their safety is a priority.

Do you think construction of new NPP units is realistic in Ukraine?
— Yes, I think it’s quite realistic. To tell the truth, I am a supporter of the development of nuclear energy in Ukraine, because it is much cheaper than renewable energy.
What, in your opinion, are the alternatives to high power NPPs in Ukraine?
— Probably hydraulic energy. Probably thermal energy. I do not even know. It will not be decided by ordinary citizens whom you are interviewing, but authorities.

Do you think construction of new NPP units is realistic in Ukraine?
— I think it is realistic. Moreover, I think it is a necessity. After all, electricity is among the basic human needs. In the times of the latest technologies, it is extremely difficult to imagine your life by candlelight. On the other hand, the construction of new NPP units requires resources. For construction to be successful, smart salaries should be paid.
What, in your opinion, are the alternatives to high power NPPs in Ukraine?
— I personally like solar energy. Although, there may be wind energy or bioenergy.

Do you think construction of new NPP units is realistic in Ukraine?
— Probably not. Construction of new NPP units requires considerable funds. Time passes, the existing power units become obsolete, so you need to think about the future. However, I do not know where to get funds to construct new ones. Ukraine is unlikely to cope without international support.
What, in your opinion, are the alternatives to high power NPPs in Ukraine?
— Renewable energy, of course. I, personally, support solar energy.
