Selecting the new site location for radioactive waste in the exclusion zone in Ukraine
The IAEA expert mission under the project UKR 9038 jointly by State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management (SAUEZM) and core Ukrainian organizations developed recommendations on the site location selection for radioactive waste (RW) repository. International experts particularly with Ukrainian specialists made preliminary assessment of geological conditions of the potentially suitable sites for the storage in the exclusion zone and prepared project of recommendations for Ukraine.
“The development of geological storage is necessary for safe repository of the high-level RW. The engagement of the international experience to the geological repository development process in Ukraine guarantees its safety and use the modern approaches and innovation technologies right under site development”, – underscored the Head of SAUEZM Vitaliy Petruk.

Experts also discussed the planning of further geological investigation of the crystalline rock for the purpose of selection the suitable storage site. That should be the next step on the way to development geological repository in Ukraine.
In the course of the work experts visited such industrial facilities as “Vector”, SSE Chernobyl NPP and inspected possible sites for geological repository.
The members of IAEA, SAUEZM, Ukrainian Ministry of Energy and Coal Mining, National Science Academy, State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, NNEGC “ENERGOATOM” and other participated.
