On 17 May 2018, Ukrainians will celebrate the Vyshyvanka Day. This holyday does not have a fixed date: it is celebrated annually on the third Thursday of May.
The holiday appeared relatively recently: in 2006. Student of the Chernivtsi National University Lesia Voroniuk is considered its founder. The girl invited students and teachers to choose a certain day and go to classes in an embroidered national shirt.
The action was supported by many students. After some time, the tradition went beyond the boundaries of the Chernivtsi National University virtually spreading to other educational institutions and then covered the whole country. The action was supported by members of the Ukrainian diaspora, which made the holyday world-wide.
Vyshyvanka is national clothes of Ukrainians with a grand history rooted in the time of Kyivan Rus. The embroidered shirt was a kind of amulet. The product was decorated with colorful patterns and magic symbols designed to protect the owner from troubles, illnesses and evil forces.

The World Vyshyvanka Day is a great reason to get out on the street in ethnic clothes, feel national unity, and be engaged in the immortal traditions of our ancestors.
