Ukrainian Delegation Successfully Presented National Report on Nuclear Safety in Austria

Press conference “Participation of Ukraine in the Seventh Review Meeting of Convention on Nuclear Safety” will be held on 13 April 2017 at 14:00 in the Ukrinform National News Agency of Ukraine. Within the event, participants of the Ukrainian delegation will talk about the Seventh Review Meeting of Convention on Nuclear Safety and will present main aspects of the National Report of Ukraine.

SNRIU Acting Chairman Borys Stoliarchuk, representatives of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety and the Energoatom Company will highlight the current state of nuclear and radiation safety in Ukraine focusing on the main achievements of the last three years. The experts will share information of the safety level of national NPPs; legislative and regulatory principles in the field; Ukraine’s implementation of additional measures resulting from stress tests after Fukushima NPP accident; transformation of the Shelter in Chornobyl Exclusion Zone into environmentally safe system, etc.

Special attention at the press conference will be paid to results of Ukraine’s participation in the Seventh Review Meeting of Convention on Nuclear Safety. During the Sixth Review Meeting of Convention on Nuclear Safety held in 2014, participants identified four Challenges for Ukraine, three of which Ukraine successfully completed, and four Proposals, three of which were completed as well. After the presentation of the National Report of Ukraine this year, according to results of the comprehensive discussion, member countries to the Convention identified three new Challenges, one new Proposal and noted four Good Practices in Ukraine concerning nuclear safety.

New Challenges include:

1. Reorganization of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine into Nuclear Regulatory Commission under a special Law.
2. Continued efforts for full implementation of the Comprehensive (Integrated) Safety Improvement Program, including post-Fukushima measures.
3. Implementation of EU Directives and WENRA reference levels into national legislation of Ukraine on nuclear and radiation safety.
