Ukraine and Euratom Cooperation on Nuclear and Radiation Safety Extends

On 15 March 2017, an advisory meeting with Jacques Repussard, European Commission expert and Scientific Advisor of the Director General of the Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), was held at the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS) to discuss the extension of cooperation between Ukraine and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom).

Representatives of the SSTC NRS, SNRIU, Institute for Nuclear Research and Institute of Environmental Geochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center and SSE Ecocenter participated in the meeting.

The Ukrainian experts presented advanced national scientific and technical innovations in the sphere of nuclear and radiation safety, which are in demand on world markets and which have proven to be effective for ensuring nuclear and radiation safety at nuclear installations of Ukraine, management of radioactive materials, and mitigation of consequences of the Chornobyl and Fukushima accidents.

According to Jacques Repussard, the meeting with Ukrainian colleagues demonstrated a significant potential for Ukraine and Euratom cooperation, especially on radiation monitoring, given unique achievements of Ukrainian scientists in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.

“Cooperation between Ukraine and other European countries shall be extended not only at the level of ideas, but also implemented in specific effective projects. Ukraine has very good opportunities in physical measurements. On the other hand, European experience in radiobiology may be of interest for Ukraine”, said the representative of the European Commission.

Jacques Repussard stressed that today Europe faces the threat of nuclear terrorism, which requires introduction of continuous and prompt radiation monitoring using mobile laboratories.

Looking back, the close cooperation between Ukraine and Euratom started last year after Ukraine became an Associated Member of the Euratom Research and Training Programme.
