Meeting of Working Group on Improving the System of Informing the Public about Nuclear and Radiation Safety to Be Held on 21 February
Registration deadline
Дата: 21.02.2017
On 21 February 2017, at 15:00, the regular meeting of the Working Group on Improving the System of Informing the Public about Nuclear and Radiation Safety will be held in the Aarhus Centre of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine.
The Working Group was created to develop professional recommendations to improve the system of informing.
According to the All-Ukrainian Environmental Non-Governmental Organisation “MAMA-86”, which is responsible for meeting arrangement, current Ukrainian legislative framework in this area has the proper level. However, the system of informing has significant gaps. The main factor is the lack of unity and cooperation of all interested parties, especially the public, local authorities and NPP representatives.
Within the current legislation, NPP management created training information centres at the power plants to conduct training of pupils and students. However, the majority of problems cannot be solved only by NPP representatives without the active participation of local authorities and local communities. First of all, these are educational and awareness raising measures aimed at younger and older age groups, at presenting prevention and health care issues. This also includes understandable, accessible and honest awareness on the state of safety, which will allow every citizen to get clear view of the situation and to make weighted decision on this issue.
“We offer to use the experience of EU countries and to create local information boards in Ukraine in order to fill the gaps in the system of informing aimed at improving unity and awareness of the public”, said Hanna Holubovska-Onisimova, Head of “MAMA-86” Coordination Council. She said that such boards exist is France for more than 30 years. Their efficiency was proven over time and information on different nuclear and radiation safety issues comes to the public on time and in sufficient quantity.
The tentative agenda of Working Group session: results of the visit of Working Group representatives to Nikopol on the establishment of local information boards, plan of further actions on local information board improvement, analysis of informing systems.
The event is open to the public. Free entrance.
