B-8 Reference Source Detected in Kharkiv
The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine jointly with other ministries, institutions and organizations continues to implement measures aimed at detecting illicit trafficking of radioactive materials, its withdrawal and placement for appropriate safe storage.
In September 2016 in Kharkiv, in the territory of military camp, B-8 reference source was detected. It was used to check operability and stable operation of radiometric equipment, whose equivalent dose rate exceeded the established standards.

During the third quarter of 2016, the cases of withdrawal of radioactively contaminated metal scrap from illicit trafficking occurred at iron and steel enterprises of Ukraine. The Directorate of mail processing and transport in Kyiv of the Ukrainian State Enterprise of Posts Ukrposhta withdraw postal items whose equivalent dose rate (gamma-radiation) exceeded the reference levels approved by the State Chief Medical Doctor of the capital. Items: watches, compasses, etc. were transferred to USC Radon for storage.
