Detection of Orphan Radiation Sources in Bila Tserkva
According to the SNRIU Northern State Inspectorate on Nuclear and Radiation Safety and Kyiv State Interregional Specialized Plant of Radon Corporation, the remains of non-operable KIS-RD unit (a set of test benches for dosimetry of equipment) with four radiation sources with cobalt-60 radionuclide were revealed in October 2015 in the city of Bila Tserkva in the basement of the Kyiv Regional Scientific and Production Center of Standardization, Metrology and Certification.

Remains of KIS-RD unit
Considering the absence of complete technical documentation for the unit and appropriate lifting devices and presence of radiation, it was decided to postpone removal of radioactive sources from this unit for more detailed study of the procedure and conditions of their safe withdrawal.
In February 2016, these sources were removed and transported for temporary storage to the Kyiv State Interregional Specialized Plant of Radon Corporation after appropriate technical measures by experts of the Radon Specialized Plant and Nuclear Research Institute.
