Detecting Illicit Trafficking of Nuclear and Other Radiation Sources
During the first quarter of 2015, the SNRIU State Nuclear and Radiation Safety Inspectorates continued activities aimed at detecting illicit trafficking of nuclear and other radiation sources outside regulatory control and took measures to ensure their further safe and secure storage.
In January 2015, metal pipes with increased gamma EDR were detected in a railroad car with scrap metal that arrived at the Azovstal Iron and Steel Works in Mariupol. Contaminated pipes were also detected at the beginning of February 2015 at Arcelor Mittal Enterprise in Kryvyi Rih.
At the end of 2015, during boarding on the Kyiv-Amsterdam flight at Boryspil airport, the State Border Service detected a citizen of Ukraine whose watch exceeded the equivalent dose level defined by law.
The dangerous items were removed and sent for storage.
