Containers for Radwaste Transport to Exclusion Zone to Be Manufactured and Transferred to Ukrainian Enterprises with Assistance of G-7 Countries

The Working Group Meeting of the G7 Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction was held in Ottawa, Canada, during which Liubov Zinkevych, Head of the Department for Chornobyl NPP Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste Management, and Margaryta Raiets, Head of the Information, Communications and Public Relations Department of the State Enterprise “Center for Administrative, Technical, and Information Support for Exclusion Zone Management” presented the interests of the State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management.

“Due to an active dialogue of the member states of the G7 Global Partnership aimed at developing an fruitful international cooperation of Ukraine with foreign partners and attracting resources from the donor countries into Ukrainian projects, a project was launched in 2017 with the financial support of the US Government, which envisages completion of manufacturing and transfer of containers for transportation and storage of spent radiation sources to the centralized storage facility at the Vektor site in the exclusion zone in late 2018”, Liubov Zinkevych informed during the Working Group Meeting.

“One of the priority tasks aimed at ensuring safety in our state is transportation of radiation sources from five special combines in the territory of Ukraine to the exclusion zone where the most modern storage facility in Europe was constructed. The acceptance of containers will ensure reliable radiological, biological and physical protection during transportation”, SAEZ Chairman Vitaly Petruk commented.

The dialogue continued during this event between Ukraine and the countries participating in the G7 Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction with discussion of the projects in the field of radiological, chemical, biological and nuclear safety relevant for Ukraine, presentation of new ones including the improvement of the physical protection system for temporary radioactive waste disposal sites in the exclusion zone, and development of technical decision for retrieval of radiation sources from closed or operating solid radwaste storage facilities (with drawing up of construction design decisions, design documentation and unstandardized equipment and devices for retrieval of radiation sources).
