On 21 December, on the territory of Kyiv Special Plant, General Directors of the Ukrainian enterprises belonging to the Radon State Corporation who are responsible for radioactive waste management received sets of modern equipment for emergency response at enterprises and remediation of radioactive waste storage sites.
Under the international technical assistance with financial support of the European Union, the Ukrainian party received 82 units of equipment costing more than 2,500,000 euros. In particular, the enterprises received vehicles for transportation of emergency team members, equipment for field measurements, individual protection means, communication equipment and storage containers. The project was performed by the Lithuanian company LOKMIS.
“Ukraine currently continues to improve the infrastructure for radioactive waste management to enhance radiation safety and reach a qualitatively new level. The received modern equipment will help to respond to possible emergencies and provide for remediation of the storage points for decontamination waste generated resulting from Chornobyl accident and placed within and beyond the Exclusion Zone”, the Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management Vitaliy Petruk stated.
In addition, Marius Janukonis, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to Ukraine, informed that a part of the equipment was manufactured in Ukraine in the framework of the project and expressed the hope that successful cooperation between Ukraine and Lithuania would continue – for example, for the exchange of experience and developments related to NPP decommissioning.
